A street Raleigh closed before Hurricane Florence will remain closed
A busy street near Cameron Village that was closed as a precaution in advance of Hurricane Florence will remain closed until the end of November.
The city barricaded Clark Avenue on Sept. 11 where it crosses a creek and becomes Peace Street, between Cameron Village and Broughton High School. Heavy rains in August damaged a culvert and a retaining wall and undermined the sidewalk, and the unstable condition of the crossing prompted the city to shut down the street before the downpours expected from the hurricane.
Now city officials say they’ll replace the 70-year-old metal pipe under Clark and repair the pavement and the sidewalk before reopening the street.
The city has set up two detours. Drivers coming westbound on Peace Street are directed on to Smallwood Drive to Cameron Street and Woodburn Road in Cameron Village.
The detour for eastbound drivers is longer. It entails turning left on to Woodburn Road, right onto Cameron Street, then left on Sutton Drive, right on Nichols Drive and right on St. Marys Street.
